i believe in planning. (er, at least having a planner.)

(my brand, spankin' new planner by russell + hazel)

On our honeymoon, Gabe told me that he missed my "I Believe in Mondays" series...so, I'm getting back on track with that. This one's for you, sweetheart!

This Monday, I believe....in having a physical, write-in-able planner. And a cute pen to go with.

Now that we're in the final days of January, I'm aware that the ol' "I just got married...life is crazy" excuse is about to expire. Infact, I believe it expires on your one month anniversary, meaning I've got exactly one week to get my rear in gear. Incase you weren't aware, I am not a planner. But, this year I'm trying to jot down one little to-do every day that will keep me more "together".

Today's operation: Respond to mountain of emails + messages from family, friends, blog friends and others. I kept receiving all these sweet words while I was packing up wedding things, getting on planes, on my honeymoon, repacking...and they all got set aside until I had a moment to breathe + properly respond. Well, newsflash! Life will probably never bring you that moment unless you sit down and make it. So, that's happening today.

Tomorrow's operation: Send out belated holiday packages. Ish. That's embarassing.

Speaking of planning...see that heart-filled square above? It says, "Spend day with husband". Yes! In Kuwait, of all places. I leave in two weeks. We've never been face-to-face for V-day, and I'm so excited. Even if Kuwait isn't the most romantic location on the planet, we'll take it. :)

How about you? Do you carry a planner, and regularly make notes? Or do you use your iPhone to keep yourself on track? Or are you free-spirited enough to live without one?

  2. I have *the* master notebook, which houses daily/monthly/lofty to-do's. I make lists every day of things to do, which corresponds with my big dry-erase calendar on the fridge and am happy as a pig in crud to check things off. I am an organizational maniac. And I love it.

Meanwhile, I can't believe you're going to Kuwait. Are there all sorts of cultural norms you need be schooled on before you go? You know, like not showing any ankle in public or the equivalent of learning how to order a cheesesteak in Philly? WIZ WIT!

  4. I use a planner for school work mostly, and regular extra-curriculars, like weekly sorority chapter meetings, and I use my phone for things that don't happen on such a regular basis, like birthday parties and anniversaries.

  5. I have a planbook I use for school, that I made, printed and bound myself. It is essential while I teach 23 different classes a week and 460 kids.
I also keep a social calendar that is usually pretty bare (I'm more of a spur of the moment friend). I keep that on google calendars and it works well for dentist appts and friends.
I like having all the organization, it relaxes me to know I have it all written down, leaves my head free for other things.

  8. I love having a planner. I suppose I'm a little bit of a planner a little bit of a spontaneous person. I know I like to see how my month is going. I'm glad you're getting back on track from the wedding busy-ness. Hope you have a great week!!

  9. I have a million and one calendars {boys' activities, work stuff, appointments, bills to be paid, happy things to look forward to... you know, like pedicures and things like that}, and my planner is the master that holds it all!

Two weeks to Kuwait! When I first started reading your blog a few years back, I never would have imagined the path you'd be taking. A holiday in the Middle East! Who'da thunk it?

  10. Hey Bethany!

I love your planner! I was looking at the website and I couldn't figure out what all was what. Which filler papers did you buy for your planner?

  11. p.s. congrats on being able to spend your first Valentine's day with your husband, even if it's in Kuwait, it'll make for a memorable time for sure!

  12. Here's what I purchased, girls, for those who are asking!

The mini-binder (in gold, of course!): russellandhazel.com/content/mini-binder

    The mini-filler paper: russellandhazel.com/content/mini-filler-paper

The mini-smartdate month tabs (sold out through r+h and a few other online shops!) But, available here: thinkrockpaperscissors.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RPS&Product_Code=or0126&Category_Code=org

All told, it was $44investment...but the binder + filler paper are undated, so the monthly tabs ($16) are the only annual purchase needed. :)

  14. Hi Bethany! I love your blog and I love this planner! I have calendars in almost every room of my house and am always looking for a new, cute planner! I actually was wondering where your pen came from also... I know super random, but hey, I love the color and it looks great with your planner too! Thanks!

  15. Thanks, Megan! :) The pen was from Mara + Mi paper shop in Stillwater, MN. The brand is Marvy Uchida, pen title "Le Pen"...here's the online shop:

The word on the street is that Michaels carries them, too! Good luck not buying all of them. ;)

  16. good for you taking a second to sit back and unwind. i'm trying to do the same thing after our engagement 2 weeks ago, but with school starting right after it happened, i'm in crazytown.

but i love the planner! it's so pretty and seems to be so you :) i use a moleskine one that has the days of the week on the left side and lined paper on the right side. it's wonderful for list making or mini note taking or just writing down something i want to remember.

and woo kuwait! that's absolutely crazy, but i'm so excited for you. time to spend with your new husband, even on a deployment? lucky lady right there :) and you better celebrate this valentine's day right!

  18. I'm a huge believer in the power of the almighty planner:-) My life would be one big scrambled mess if I didn't have a way to jot down appointments/dates/grocery lists/etc. xoxo

  19. Your planner is adorable. Yes, you are right-Kuwait is not the most romantic place (i was deployed there), but your hubby is there. Enjoy.

  21. I couldn't agree more. I was using my iPhone as a planner for a while there, and it made me very anxious to not be able to see my days spread out. I got an Erin Condren planner a few months ago and love it! I just wish the month tabs didn't get bent so easily.

I love your teal pen! Where can I find one of those?!

  22. I would die without my planner. I just retired my last planner that spanned July 2010- December 2011. I think I am going to keep it and look back at that crazy 18 months of my life where I got married, bought a house and had a baby :) You can't do that with an iPhone my friend ;)

  26. Just married? You are probably reeling from the big day. Once it has all settled down and you’ve written all those thank you notes, do the next most important thing: purchase a life insurance policy. I work with IntelliQuote where they know you’ll sleep better knowing your spouse and your future family are protected. IntelliQuote is a great place to start to get an idea of how little that sound sleep can cost you. http://bit.ly/xM5Rti
