nailed it.

Before I left the US, I had to seriously downgrade my nail polish collection.

It was strewn across a desktop + cosmetic bag + a shelf or two...and the thought of toting twenty-two bottles of polish into a Middle Eastern country seemed ridiculous.**  This lifestyle change wouldn't require a bevy of jazzy nail colors, given that my husband might be the only face I see most days. And perhaps a stray cat or two. So, I allowed myself four bottles of polish + a top coat. That's it.

Here are my four picks:

All Fired Up-Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure. My staple punchy red...as you may have noticed! It has a nice shiny finish, and looks great after just one coat. Sally Hansen isn't trendy, I know, but there's something about the brush in all SH polish that just works for me.

I Pink I Can-Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure. A newer acquisition...really fem and sweet. Ditto to previous comment about the brush. Paints on smooth as butter. And, like most of her polish: under $5.

Tart Deco-Essie. I adore Essie colors. (Who doesn't?) But I get the worst wear from them. Yet it seems Ol' Faithful Sally Hansen isn't exactly hip to the color of the season. So, I splurged on Essie's Tart Deco...worth it. Even if my nails chip after a day or two, the color is so much fun.

Mint Sorbet-Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear. The problem I've encountered with mint is that it often takes 3+ coats before the paint becomes opaque. Translucent polish just doesn't do it for me. But, this mint goes on opaque from the start. Love. And obviously, Sally doesn't disappoint with the brush here. Per usual. ;)

Finding myself a little bored on Friday, I finally tried the "party nail", which I've seen all over Instagram + Pinterest. (Best done by my friend, Jacin. Girlfriend knows how to rock the party nail!) Nine nails in Tart Deco, one nail in Mint Sorbet...and a few flakes of glitter. Such a fun little change from my usual self-manicure.

Turns out, I was right. No need for 22 bottles of polish here in Kuwait. Four hues + a little glitter works just fine for the eyes that see me daily: my husband doesn't care if my nails are red, mint or glittered...and the kittens?

Well, you can't judge the hand that feeds you.

**Not to mention that I've had problems with overweight international baggage in the past (what?...I travel prepared!), so every single ounce I packed was thoroughly analyzed before making the baggage cut.

  1. I like sally hansen brushes too. I got a coral and yellow from her line. my favorite glitter nail polish is from sephora with the large gold glitters inside. so lovely! downsizing seems to be the way to go, good choice of colors to bring with you behtany! have a great monday :)

  2. Love the nails and the mix of colors! I am a huge Essie fan myself, especially their bright red, Lollipop. I had the same problem with chipping until I tried their no-chip top coat, No Chips Ahead. Seriously works wonders, but does take forever to dry. Not that you need another polish over there, but just in case!

  3. Aside from when I get my nails done (which is sadly more often than I'd like to admit, because somehow getting them done just seems to make me stop biting my nails) I use Sally Hanson most of the time. I have a box full of polish, and I'm willing to bet that all but maybe one bottle is SH.
Also, I love how you have your nails done right now! I keep seeing it all over Pinterest :)

  4. I really love the Rimmel 60-second line. The brush is nice and thick, so it goes on quick and tries so fast! But lately I've really liked Essie and OPI too.

I didn't know that style was called 'party nail'! I've seen it on Pinterest too - super cute!

  5. these are good choices :) and yes, sally hansen brushes are perfect!

  6. I've got that same Mint Sorbet! Good choice. :)

  7. First I want to say I absolutely love your blog. I found it while reading EATC's blog. Welcome to Kuwait! I look forward to reading about your adventures with your husband.

As far as the nail polish... great choices! I love Essie, but prefer OPI. Fortunately our selection in Kuwait has grown dramatically over the years.

  8. Beautiful! Love the shades and I know what you mean with having too many bottles. I have a shoebox full... and with moving in a month's time I don't like the idea of parting with any! I keep telling myself as they are all in a box together that counts as packed already, right? xx

P.S. Love the "party" nail! I do this sometimes just to emphasis my ring finger :)

  9. i've been meaning to add 'tart deco' to my collection for a while now. i think you chose some great polishes to bring with you!

  10. I could never narrow it down to 4 shades - way to go girl!

My 4 year old niece has been rocking that look. She saw it in a magazine and it has become her signature look. (Yes she's 4 and "must" have her nails done at all times.)

  11. Can you buy polish there ? So beautiful they look amazing I might go and do mine now ... seriously ! xx

  12. Love these colors. I've been looking for a good mint color but it is sold out so many places I go!

  13. I also have Mint Sorbet, and I was kind of bummed at how many coats it took when I applied it the first time! Then again, if I bought and used a good top-coat, I'd probably get more wear out of it once I apply it!

  14. Gosh, I really need to follow your example and whittle down my nail polish collection. I wouldn't be surprised if I have around 100 bottles - what's worse is that I cycle between less than 10 of those!

Also, from a fellow newlywed, small-town Wisconsin girl, I am incredibly excited to have found your blog!

Best of luck in your new adventure. I can't wait to see where you two will go :)

Your newest follower from You.And.Me.Are.We - feel free to stop by (I may or may not have some photos of cheese curds going up on Friday ;))!

  15. Good for you to have the will power to whittle down your nail polish collection! While I always end up wearing one of the same 2 or 3 colors, I like having my options. Loving the party nails!

  16. Beautiful colors! You have excellent taste. :)

  17. Bethany - there's a fab nail salon in Salmiya that has an enormous range of Essie and other nail polishes. Its called N Bar. The girls are so friendly and chatty tat you can go alone or with a friend. Its really sociable the way they have it set out. I can't remember the name of the little mall its it but will try to find out for you.

  18. Adorable! I've always had an aversion to color on my nails but I've learned to suppress that thank goodness. Definitely will be testing some of these colors!

Every time you comment, a unicorn gets his wings. Also, my phone beeps and your words bring me joy. :)
