date night.

(i remembered this dress being longer....nixed due to visible knee. too saucy!)

Over the past few weeks, people have kindly asked me if I miss anything from back home. You know what silly thing I miss? Easy dressing. Bare shoulders. And sundresses.

While there are tons of interesting, positive experiences here...and I hate to even mention a negative...I've got to be honest: one of the less enjoyable experiences has been learning how to dress in a different culture, specifically one with intense heat, conservative dress codes and lots of men that have no problem making their attention known even when you're covered from elbow to ankle.

Now that I've been here for a month, I don't take note of the stares as much...but Gabe does, always laughingly telling me that men are eyeing me in the market. Swear...I'm not bragging. If you're a western woman in Kuwait, even if you're short + average looking  + covered up like me, you're going to get stares. It's just a fact of life.

Gabe is taking me out tonight to our fave Indian restaurant, and it's been weeks since we went on a real, true date. I was determined to look (conservatively) foxy. Well, after an hour of pillaging my trimmed-down closet, I'm back at my daily uniform: black leggings and a lengthy tunic. Sigh. Clearly, this is all an excellent excuse to go shopping this weekend, eh? :)

Happy Friday, friends. If you feel so obliged, do bare a little knee this weekend in my honor. ;)

  1. SO question--what do you do all day while Gabe is off being superman? Do you have a job there? Do you have friends? I'm fascinated by this life you lead in a country far, far away, where you can't wear dresses or shorts.

  2. LOL @ average looks. Pretty on the outside and beautiful on the inside from what I can tell from reading your blog. :) Your fair skin is really rare and they literally bleach their skin to try to obtain that color. The orange tan look is starting to make an appearance but not like the West. Tell Gabe you need armed guards while he's at work. ;)

  3. Thats too bad about your dresses, it's nice to dress up and feel pretty when you head out on date night! Wonder if you were to find a longer lace detailed slip that could peak out to add some extra length and a little feminine detail - it would depend on the dress but it might work?! Maybe your crafty mind will come up with something. Hope your date night is great!

  5. I hope you had a fun date!
I know how lost I'd feel without my sundresses on hot days (100 degrees here in PA!), but I'm sure with a little time and practice, you'll find some cute outfits that would be deemed acceptable in Kuwait. :) If not? Well, just save all your cute American clothes for in-the-house-dates!

  8. I studied abroad in Egypt and whenever I went into the Souk I would get called Spice Girl or Baby Spice! This was like 3 years ago...hilarious and weird.

  9. It will get easier, I promise! Maxi dresses with a cardigan or little jacket are always a good option when you need to dress up. I lived in cuffed boyfriend jeans and cardigans in high school--good thing buildings are always so cold, so you can plan to dress for that rather than walking around in the heat! :)

  10. Oh man! Heat and having to be covered up... That is not an ideal combination! I'd love to see some pics of the outfits you wear there. And I second everyone who said they have reason to stare... Here, you are natural girl next door beautiful... But there, you are downright exotic!

  12. It's been in the 90s and 100s for two weeks now, and it's gonna continue for the next few days...believe me, I've been baring my knees, thighs, shoulders and any other body part I can get away with, haha :P This weekend I'll think of you when I go out wearing obscenely short shorts. Might I suggest you invest in some cute 50s-style midi skirts? I bet they'd look adorbs on you :)

  15. Eeeeepppp, nothing above the knee?? Not that I dress like a skanky whore (promise), but that would kill me! Especially in the heat. Yikes! (You and Gabe should have a "date night" at home just so you can wear that dress. From the picture it looks like it's adorable!

You are one brave lady for living over in the middle east. I give you crazy kudos! :)

  16. I hope you have a really great date! You should do outfit posts, just so we can see what you're learning with how to adapt over there! Good thing maxi dresses are pretty in right now riiiiiiight?! :) Hope you have a great weekend!

  17. I bet it is hard to look rather sexy having to conform to such extremes. How long do you think you guys will have to stay in Kuwait ? Gosh I think i would find it extremely difficult with all that sun and not being allowed to wear anything to help me feel less hot and at least to allow me to catch some colour !

  18. It's definitely a fashion challenge, but that can be part of what makes it fun!
(Also, I would totally wear a knee-length dress/skirt. You're going to get stared at anyway, might as well be comfortable!)

    1. P.S. On your shopping trip, go to Sara in the fabric souk, and have her make you some fun clothes! :)

  21. Oh I know what you mean about the attention from men in the Middle East! It's the same in Jordan - I hate it!

  22. I hope you had a nice date!

If you end up getting a new wardrobe I hope you'll share the new ways that you style and dress up. It would be interesting to see how you learn to dress up while still being culturally sensitive. =)

  23. It's not good for date night (or anytime you want to look pretty), but I was living in Aladdin Pants for 9 weeks in SE Asia. They are miracles. Harem pants might look crazy, but they cover your legs completely and actually keep your legs cool since the fabric isn't touching your legs directly. I brought home 10 pairs as gifts! I told myself pairing printed harem pants with a plain top and a high bun was chic. But, really it was just keeping me cool. I highly recommend you find some in Kuwait! If not, I will send you one of these 10 pairs!
